Get it on your TV

The only tricky bit is getting a web page onto your TV. Pick what you've got and it's three steps.

{%- assign setup_film = 'cc-tv-setup.mp4' | file_url -%} {%- if setup_film contains '.mp4' -%}
{%- endif -%}

Laptop and an HDMI cable

Recommended · works with every TV
  1. Plug the laptop into the TV

An HDMI cable from the laptop to any HDMI socket on the TV. Newer MacBooks need a small USB-C to HDMI adaptor. Note which socket you used.

  2. Switch the TV to that input

Press Source or Input on the remote and choose HDMI 1, 2 or 3 to match. Your laptop screen appears on the TV.

  3. Open casesandclues.tv on the laptop

In Chrome, Safari or Edge. Type your game code. If the TV has no sound, open the laptop's sound settings and choose the TV as the output. Press F11 or the green full-screen button to lose the browser bars.

Samsung or LG smart TV

Both have a browser built in
  1. Find the browser

Samsung: press Home, look for Internet in the apps row. LG: press Home, look for Web Browser. It may be inside Apps if it's not on the row.

  2. Type casesandclues.tv

Select the address bar at the top and type it with the remote. No www needed. Then type your game code.

  3. Press OK once on the game

TV browsers mute until you do. Press OK on the remote with the game on screen and the sound starts. Made in 2019 or earlier? If the page won't load, use the laptop route instead.

Amazon Fire TV Stick

Install the free Silk browser once
  1. Get the browser

From the Fire TV home, search Silk (Amazon Silk browser) and install it. It's free and takes a minute.

  2. Open Silk and type casesandclues.tv

Select the address bar, type it, press the centre button. Then type your game code.

  3. Press the centre button once on the game

That unmutes the browser. The remote moves a pointer; you won't need it again once the phones are in.

Chromecast or Google TV

Cast a Chrome tab from a laptop
  1. Open casesandclues.tv in Chrome on a laptop

Same Wi-Fi as the Chromecast. Type your game code on the laptop.

  2. Cast the tab

Chrome menu (three dots) → Cast… → pick your TV → under Sources choose Cast tab. The tab appears on the TV.

  3. Keep the laptop awake

Leave Chrome open and the lid up. Sound comes through the TV. If it stutters, the laptop plugged in by HDMI is smoother.

Apple TV, or a TV with AirPlay

Mirror from a Mac, iPad or iPhone
  1. Open casesandclues.tv in Safari on a Mac or iPad

Type your game code there. (An iPhone works too, but then that phone can't easily be a controller.)

  2. Screen Mirror to the TV

Mac: Control Centre → Screen Mirroring → your TV. iPad: swipe down from the top right → Screen Mirroring. Same Wi-Fi as the TV.

  3. Click or tap the game once

So it can play sound. Sound follows the mirror to the TV.

Sky Glass, Sky Q, Roku, Virgin, Freeview boxes

None of these have a browser. Use a laptop
  1. Plug a laptop into the TV with an HDMI cable

Pick the HDMI input on the TV with Source or Input on the remote. This bypasses the box entirely.

  2. Open casesandclues.tv on the laptop

    Type your game code.

  3. No laptop in the house?

Any computer with HDMI works, and so does a phone with AirPlay or casting to a TV that supports it. Otherwise play on the laptop screen itself: it's smaller, but the game is the same.

Then, whichever route

The game shows a 4-letter room code and a QR square. Everyone points their phone camera at it and taps the link, or goes to casesandclues.tv on their phone and types the 4 letters. Phones can be on any Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Type a name, tap Join. Lights off. The first person in presses Begin.

Not working? Start here

No sound from the TV

Browsers stay silent until you click, tap, or press OK on the page. Do that once with the game on screen. On a laptop, also check the sound output is set to the TV, not the laptop speakers.

The TV browser won't load the game

Older TV browsers can't run it. Use a laptop and an HDMI cable, which works on every TV.

The QR code won't scan

Skip it. On your phone, open casesandclues.tv and type the 4-letter room code shown on the TV.

Our phones aren't on the TV's Wi-Fi

Doesn't matter. Phones can be on Wi-Fi or mobile data. Only casting and AirPlay need the laptop and TV on the same Wi-Fi.

Someone's phone dropped out

Open the same link again or scan the QR again. The phone rejoins at exactly the point the party is at.

The laptop screen went to sleep

Wake it and the game is still there. Before you start, set the laptop to never sleep while plugged in, or just nudge the trackpad now and then.

The TV screen went dark or froze

Reload the page. It reattaches to your room automatically. If it asks for a code, type the 4-letter room code the phones already have.

My game code doesn't work

Check for look-alike letters, and that it's the game code from your email, not the 4-letter room code. Still stuck? Email us and we'll sort it straight away.
